SUMMARY:Xicanx Month Call for SAY Si Alumni Artists
DESCRIPTION:APPLY ONLINE\nSAY Sí and the San Antonio River Foundation are seeking proposals from SAY Sí alumni for a temporary installation or performance celebrating Xicanx month to be presented to the public on August 24, 2024 at Brazos Pocket Park at Apache Creek.\nXicanx Month is a city-wide celebration commemorating the Chicano Arts Movement that holds its roots right here in San Antonio. Xicanx Month will not just be an event; it pays tribute to the cultural legacy that has shaped our community. The Chicano Arts Movement, with its origins in San Antonio, has played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural identity of our city. Xicanx Month seeks to honor and build upon this legacy through a series of collaborative events, exhibitions, and performances throughout the month of August.\nWe use Xicanx to refer to Chicano, Chicana, and Chicanx. The term reflects those who fought for and claim this designation and incorporates the ‘X’ from the Spanish transcription of the Nahuatl sound ‘ch’. Nahuatl is one of the major Indigenous languages in Mexico. The ‘x’ on the end signals gender-neutral and non-binary inclusivity.\nELIGIBILITY\nThe opportunity is open to all SAY Sí alumni, ages 18 years and over, and a part of the San Antonio River community, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability.\nPROJECT GOALS\nCelebrate San Antonio’s legacy as a center of the Chicano Arts Movement.\nSELECTION CRITERIA\nThe award decision will be based on aesthetic excellence, relevance to legacy of the Chicano Art Movement and expressed interest in the site and connection to the creek and natural environment.\nPROJECT LOCATION\nBrazos Pocket Park at Apache Creek.  The proposal may also incorporate the SAY Sí campus.\nProposals should demonstrate the following:\n\nAn outline of the project and its connection to the Chicano Arts Movement.\nThe proposed medium or performance elements suitable for the outdoor environment.\nDemonstrations of experience completing an aesthetically excellent and publicly engaging artwork or performance; include a portfolio (5-10 images) showcasing previous relevant work.\nInterest in contributing to the San Antonio River cultural landscape on Apache Creek.\n\nBENEFITS:\n\n$1,000 Artist Fee for the selected artist, including costs for materials and supplies.\nInclusion in Xicanx Month City-wide Calendar\nContribution to the activation of the Apache Creek Trailway and SAY Sí mission\n\n\nDEADLINE TO APPLY: 11:59pm, June 18, 2024.
