SUMMARY:Xicanx Month Art Installation and Celebration at Brazos Pocket Park at Apache Creek
DESCRIPTION:August marks the start of #xicanxmonth ( https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/xicanxmonth/ )! Celebrate with us and our friends at SAY Sí ( https://saysi.org/ ) on Saturday, August 24th, at the Brazos Pocket Park to celebrate the unveiling of Manuel Davila’s Xicanx Month Art Installation!\nXicanx Month is a commemoration of the Chicano Arts Movement that holds its roots right here in San Antonio. In collaboration with SAY Sí, the San Antonio River Foundation held an open call for SAY Sí alumni, and has selected artist Manuel Davila to create Light Box, an illuminating sculpture featuring painted imagery of the 78207 and 78237 zip codes. Located at Brazos Pocket Park across Apache Creek from SAY Sí, visitors will be able to view the artwork from 5:30-8:30 on Saturday, August 24. The event will include refreshments, light bites, hands-on artmaking, and a Chicano Soul DJ. Please join us for a vibrant, community-led celebration, free and open to all. For more information about the city-wide celebration, visit https://www.cultureandartssa.org/xicanxmonthsa.  \nManuel Davila, an Indigenous 2Spirit Coahuiltecan artist, utilizes their artistic practice to celebrate and honor their ancestral heritage. By collecting and cataloging pigment minerals from the San Antonio River and its Missions, Davila bridges the gap between the past and the present, fostering cultural pride and environmental stewardship. Through their creations, they aspire to convey messages and lessons for future generations, ensuring the preservation and continuation of Coahuiltecan traditions. \n
