Art In the Open: Karla Kopalli, Nature/Nurture Workshop
Join Karla Kopalli for Nature/Nurture, a multi-part public art project honoring the vital contributions of San Antonio’s women to their families, communities, and city. Through collective creation and performance, this project highlights the nourishing power of women as a force for thriving communities. Then, all participants are invited to return to Confluence Park on Saturday, March 8 for a special performance by the artist at 2:00pm.
Women of San Antonio are invited to a hands-on workshop led by Karla Kopalli to create caracolas—hand-formed clay shells symbolizing their strength, creativity, and nurturing roles. The caracola represents connection to the earth, the act of carrying and giving, and the value of women’s contributions.
During this free come-and-go workshop guided by the artist, participants will reflect on their roles and contributions to their communities and shape clay by firmly closing their hand around it, forming a caracola.
This collective effort seeks to create 260 ceramic caracolas, each a testament to the power and impact of the women of San Antonio.
Then, celebrate International Women’s Day at Confluence Park with Karla Kopalli on Saturday, March 8. Karla presents the community caracolas with a performance at the BHP Pavilion at 2:00pm. All workshop participants are encouraged to attend.
